u-he Protoverb

Protoverb is an experimental reverb based on the idea of a "room simulator". Most algorithmic reverbs try to avoid resonances or model the reflections of sound from a rooms walls. Protoverb does the opposite. It builds up as many room resonances as possible, modeling the body of air in the room. It therefore does not need to modulate or colour the signal. The result is a very natural sounding reverbration with some interesting features: Long standing frequencies resonate louder, as if the air takes some time to get excited. Multiple instruments don't mash into a diffuse mud, they stay distinct. If you play a short melody, the room seems to repeat a ghost echo of that melody. Those properties are indeed found in churches and large halls, but they're rarely found in conventional algorithmic reverbs.

However...

To achieve this kind of stuff, Protoverb works with loads and loads of parallel, serial and networked delays. By all means, there is no mathematical formula that makes such a structure sound "just right". As with all delay based reverbs, it's down to trial and error, and maybe a lot of luck with random values. Therefore we designed Protoverb to present you with delay lines of random lengths and a random assembly of networking and feedback strategies. Which, if you're lucky and you come across a great setting, you can submit to our website, along with a few details

Push buttons to randomize!

To be precise, the small text box at the bottom contains two random entries. The first part depicts the network structure, strategies for a spatial layout and distribution of delay taps, strategies for finding useful delay lengths and so on. The second part is a seed for a pseudo-random number generator which is used to find various parameters, such as average delay length, which prime number to chose (if any) and so on. This text can either be edited by double click, or both parts can be independently randomized with the two random buttons below.

Steinberg – Model E

The Model E VST Plug-In from Steinberg is modeled after the classic Moog Model D Minimoog, capable of the same fat 3-VCO monophonic bass sounds of the Mini. But because the Model E is a software plug-in you get many more advantages over the real deal. To start, you have MIDI, unlimited storage for your created sounds, super-stable tuning, a warm filter and oscillators with crisp, clear sounds. Of course you are no longer limited to monophonic sounds, the Model E has 64 voice polyphony and 16 multitimbral parts. And the Plug-In comes at a fraction of the price and weight of a real Moog synthesizer! Cubase's MIDI tracks are routed directly to the input of Model E. outputs appear directly in the VST mixer, so effects and EQ can be applied just like any audio channel. All Model E settings are automatically saved with your song files and the final mix can be streamed out to an audio file.
But among all these new features the look and basic design concept remains true to the original Minimoog. Three oscillators per voice, a great 24dB filter with ADS and no LFO. And its sounds are just as authentic. Being digital, it's expected that they should lack some of the 'oomph' of an analog Minimoog. But they impressively cover the gamut of Minimoog bass sounds. From low heavy bass to nasal whistle-y sounds from HipHop and R&B to Techno. Other features include Mono-Mode and a Glide or portamento type effect. Up to 8 Model E's can independently be used as VST Instruments in a song.. it's like having 8 Minimoogs at your fingertips! At its low price, getting the Model E plug-in is a no-brainer for any Cubase VST user who has ever dreamed of using the Minimoog. It is used by Hans Zimmer.

Tone2 - FireBird2

Unique & innovative

Firebird is not just another subtractive synthesizer, it uses an innovative synthesis architecture to deliver unique sounds. The interface is very easy to use and allows you to create interesting patches with minimal effort. FireBird comes with 437 build-in sounds.

Harmonic Content Morphing (HCM) synthesis

Harmonic Content Morphing synthesis is also used in FireBird's much more powerful successor Gladiator. It is based on a large range of standard waves, such as saw, pulse, as well as more complex wave material, like multi-waves, trumpets, organs, pads, pianos and voice samples.
These waves are modified by special algorithms, which can alter the harmonic structure. FireBird allows 84 different morphable oscillator types. Also 23 spectral manipulations or "modifiers" can be applied to the oscillators. A fat knob doubles or quadruples the number of oscillators giving up to 8 oscillators per voice.
FireBird comes with 38 different sounding filter types, such as Lowpass (6-40dB), Analog, Vocal, Phaser, Comb, EQ, FM, AM, Resample, Elliptic and so on.
The synthesizer offers 13 different effect types. The effects section has several reverb and tab-delay variations, chorus, ensemble, flanger, and rotary effects as well as combinations. A simple arpeggiator is also included.

Features

  • Very easy to program and easy to use
  • Uses an innovative synthesis: Harmonic content morphing (HCM)
  • 437 presets included
  • 84 morphable oscillator types
  • 38 filter types
  • True stereo mode, 4x unison mode
  • 23 spectral manipulations "modifiers" can be applied to the oscillators

U-he - TyrellN6

Freeware!

Tyrell is the name of a project by the German online magazine Amazona.de. A reader survey and follow-on forum posts provided a pool of ideas for a low-cost HARDWARE analogue synth, which Mic 'Moogulator' Irmer collected and used to develop quite a powerful concept. Based on a design similar to Roland's classic Juno 60, a few modules and novel features could be added without making the product too expensive...

However, it soon became obvious that developing the hardware would have taken years, so I (Urs) offered to turn the core design into a freeware softsynth. That was late 2010. Only a few weeks later, TyrellN6 was out for beta testing! After some serious bug-fixing and fine tuning, the final release version became available in April 2011.

Version 3

In April 2013 we released TyrellN6 version 3, which now supports VST3. The new user interface was designed by Ryo Ishido.

Key features

  • new skin designed for Amazona.de by Ryo Ishido
  • smooth overdrive in the oscillator mixer
  • filter output can be fed back into the mixer
  • unison mode, with voice index modulation source
  • envelopes can be looped or triggered via LFO
  • envelopes retrigger just like classic hardware

u-he Triple Cheese - Luscious cheesy comb synthesizer

Triple Cheese is a unique-sounding freeware synthesizer plugin. Triple Cheese doesn't use any of the classic synthesis techniques – substractive, FM or additive – but various forms of comb filter i.e. very short chromatically tuned delays. The three cheese modules in a row either generate their own signal, or process the output of the previous module.

Update Oct 2015: TripleCheese V1.2.1 (rev 3898) adds AAX support, fixes minor bugs
